Hyperliquid Loses Dominance in On-Chain Perpetuals Market as Competitors Gain Traction
Hyperliquid's market share in the on-chain perpetuals sector has plummeted from 71% in May to just 38%, according to data from Dune Analytics. The platform, once the undisputed leader, is now facing stiff competition from newer entrants like Lighter and Aster, which have captured 16.8% and 14.9% of the market, respectively.
The on-chain perpetuals market, where traders speculate on asset prices using derivatives without expiration dates, has seen explosive growth. Cumulative trading volume across all platforms hit $700 billion over the past four weeks, with $42 billion traded in the last 24 hours alone. The number of protocols has surged from two in 2022 to over 80 today.
Lighter, backed by a16z, and Aster, supported by Binance Labs, have been the primary beneficiaries of Hyperliquid's decline. Their rise underscores the fierce competition in decentralized derivatives trading, where transparency and immutability are key selling points.
